Chapter Annual Meeting & Leona Heights Hike, 10:00 AM, Saturday, Sept 22, 2007
We're going to do something a little different this year for the annual meeting, a hike to see the mining area of Leona Heights in the Oakland Hills. From the late 1800's to the 1930's sulfur (iron pyrite) was mined here, and transported to Richmond where it was processed into sulfuric acid. There were also quarries producing stone for Oakland's roads and other purposes. The tour was developed by Dennis Evanovsky as an Oakland Heritage Alliance event, and we were fortunate to have a special tour with him in early August. There are several "mystery ruins" of processing facilities along the way. The hike will cover about 3.5 miles in around two hours, and have a net elevation gain of about 500 feet, all on gently sloping fire roads and city streets. Wear sensible shoes, bring water and lunch. We'll meet at the corner of Mountain and McDonnel in Oakland at 10:00 AM.
